15-5 PH is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel designated as UNS S15500. It hardens in two stages: martensite forms as the bar cools from the 1040°C solution anneal, then a single ageing cycle precipitates copper-rich particles that raise strength further. No cold work is needed. Bar and shape products are ordered to ASTM A564 / ASME SA-564 Type XM-12; AMS 5659 serves the aerospace route and requires consumable electrode remelted material. Chromium at 14.00 to 15.50% provides corrosion resistance, and niobium stabilises the structure for welding. Condition A machines freely below 363 HB; aged H900 lifts the tensile minimum to 1310 MPa and steps through to H1150, exchanging strength for ductility, where the elongation minimum rises to 16%. Round bar spans 3 mm to 800 mm in diameter; square, hex, flat and forged profiles are cut to length in-house. Ageing temperature sets the strength of 15-5 PH bars: each H number is the cycle temperature in °F. Below are SA-564 longitudinal minimums for bar up to 300 mm; Condition A carries only a hardness cap.
The ASTM A564 / SA-564 property minimums tabled below apply to sizes up to 300 mm. For diameters above 300 mm, mechanical properties, test location and test direction are agreed upon at the order stage and recorded on the certificate.

Condition A is the solution-annealed state in which 15-5 PH bar leaves the mill, capped at 363 HB. It's meant for machining and forming; components are aged afterwards rather than run annealed under load.
H900 gives the highest strength at 1310 MPa minimum, H1025 balances strength with toughness for shafts and seals, and H1150 delivers 16% elongation. H1150M, the double-treatment condition, is the most ductile at 18% elongation with a 255 HB minimum. H925, H1075 and H1100 sit between.
Yes, though it is not the usual sequence. The standard route is to rough machine in Condition A, age to the required H condition, then take a light finish cut where tight tolerances demand it. Aged material at H900 runs 388 HB minimum and is harder on tooling than Condition A.
