422 stainless steel round bar is a hardenable martensitic stainless steel developed for high-temperature turbine duty, and we supply it as UNS S42200 bar to ASTM A565 Grade 616. Molybdenum, tungsten and vanadium form carbides that keep the steel strong where plain chromium grades soften. Hardened and tempered bar reaches 965 MPa tensile strength for blades and bolts under full design load. European drawings identify the same steel as 1.4935 or X20CrMoWV12-1. Aerospace orders call up the same alloy through AMS 5655, which uses a slightly wider composition window than ASTM A565 Grade 616; confirm which specification your drawing cites before ordering. Round bar spans 4 mm to 500 mm in diameter, with hex, square, flat, bright and forged profiles in 1 to 6 metres or custom-cut lengths.
Gas turbine blades, valve internals and aerospace fasteners are machined from this bar for power, oil and gas and defence programmes. Type 422 follows the 12Cr-1Mo-V-W analysis pattern. Carbon at 0.20 to 0.25% allows the AISI 422 chemistry harden fully, while tungsten and vanadium carbides survive long tempering cycles.

The heat-treat condition determines which figures apply to the Grade 422 bar, so each table is labelled by that condition. Mixing values across conditions misstates a design margin.

Alloy 422 runs to 1200°F (around 650°C) under high stress and resists oxidation to 1450°F (790°C) in low-stress duty.
The designations below cover the same 12Cr-Mo-W-V family, but they are cross-references, not identical chemistries. EN 1.4935 carries a lower tungsten band than UNS S42200, so a drawing calling for 1.4935 needs the actual EN 10302 analysis confirmed before substitution. Stainless Steel 422 bars and rods contain 0.20 to 0.25% carbon, 11.00 to 12.50% chromium, 0.90 to 1.25% each of molybdenum and tungsten, and 0.20 to 0.30% vanadium.
1200°F (around 650°C) is the ceiling for SS 422 bars under high stress. In low-stress conditions, the grade resists oxidation up to 1450°F (790°C).
Hardened and tempered to ASTM A565 Condition HT is the standard supply condition for Stainless Steel 422 bars, giving 302–352 HBW. Condition H (tempered at 675°C minimum, 241–285 HBW) and annealed Condition A are produced against specific orders.
