Some of them are high tensile strength, good dimensional accuracy, rugged construction, holds the high temperature, holds high pressure, long-serviceability, greater hardiness, anti-corrosiveness. Stainless steel 420 is a basic hardenable SS with very good strength, resistance to wear and good hardiness. The material is used for surgical instruments, scissors, and valves and also is used at averagely elevated temperature for springs, etc. It shouldn’t be used at a sub-zero temperature wherein the high stress is involved. Preheating to SS 420 is given at the temperature ranging 760/815 deg C and then heated to temperature 110/1205 deg C and then forged. The forging must be cooled into the furnace held at the temperature 845 deg C. For greater softness heating at the temperature 840/900 deg C should be given and cool slowly in the furnace to provide the appropriate hardiness.
